Early Lead Carries the `Cats to 12-1 Victory

This kid is good, the best pitcher that I have ever coached. Watch what happens in his future. Great attitude, great drive, great respect for the game and the work involved to "get better".  Will get the start 3/18 vs UT. This should be good.

Final Stats

SAN MARCOS - Lance Loftin went 2-for-3, batting in five runs while notching his first-ever Texas State homerun that aided in a Texas State Bobcats 12-1 victory over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelina's Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

The win will give the `Cats an 8-4 showing as they enter Southland Conference action this weekend. In the Javelina's break from Lone Star play, they fall to 13-11 in their overall slate.

With a runner in scoring position and just one out in the opening frame, Kane Holbrooks struck out two-straight Javelina's to retire the top half and give the `Cats a chance to set the pace of the game. The Bobcats did just that, opening the rally with back-to-back base hits from Adam Witek and Laurn Randell. Jonathan Farrow hit straight into a double play, but A&M-Kingsville misplayed the ball to give the hitter a place on base and send Witek home for the first Bobcat run.

Jerry Cervantes lined a hard hit to the short stop, but beat out the play for a base hit and an RBI as Randell crossed home plate. In the next at-bat, Loftin blasted a single shot down the right field line to drive in his first two runs for a 4-0 Bobcat lead to close out the first inning.

In the bottom half of the second, Randell jacked a two-run homer over the left center wall to increase the `Cats margin to a 6-0 lead.

Texas State maintained the edge and held TAMU-K scoreless over the next six innings, while they added two more runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth frames for a 12-0 lead entering the ninth. The scoring surplus was highlighted by the clouted duo of Cervantes and Loftin in the seventh inning. Cervantes notched a double to centerfield, but was left on base for just three pitches when Loftin thumped his second two-run hit of the night, this time over the fence for his first homerun of the season.

The Bobcats opened the lineup in the bottom of the eighth inning, allowing Jason Miranda to notch his first hit of the season and Jon Lieber earned two RBI off a double to left centerfield.

A&M-Kingsville posted their lone run at the top of the ninth, sending Gil Perez across the plate on a passed ball.

Holbrooks (1-0) earned the win after holding the Javelina's scoreless over 4.0 innings and limiting the club to just one hit. Texas State held a 13-4 margin over the visiting foe in the hits column, as well.

Steven Hooker (1-3) took the loss for A&M-Kingsville, tossing for 6.0 innings and allowing eight runs off eight hits, seven of which were earned.

Texas State will open SLC play this weekend when they travel to Thibodaux, La. for a weekend series with the Nicholls State Colonels. The games will open with a Friday night contest scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
